Love Story-- "Love means never having to say you are sorry"

Love Story by Eric Segal is an example of a classic love story. It is the same old story of a rich guy falling in love with a poor girl. But the way in which the story has been presented is remarkable. It is so well written that you cannot put it down once you have set your eyes on reading it.

The story begins with the words:”What would you say about a 24 year old girl who died? That she was brilliant and Beautiful. That she loved Mozart and Bach. And The Beatles and Me…”

The story revolves around a rich guy, Oliver Barret IV and the love of his life, Jennifer Cavilleri. Oliver is portrayed as an emotional and an athletic teenager who is a pre-law student at Harvard. Jenny is a music major from Radcliffe. While Oliver is heir to a very rich family, Jenny is the daughter of a poor baker who doesn’t own a huge bank balance.

The two first meet in the library and have absolutely no idea that their meeting would turn into a deep emotional bond. Their love blossoms into marriage but is opposed to by Oliver’s father. Oliver turns his back on his family to marry Jenny. Initially they have to struggle to make ends meet. But with Oliver’s education completed and a good job, their financial woes begin to ease out.

Just then trauma hits the couple as Jenny is diagnosed with an incurable blood disease and dies within a few days. The novel tells about the emotional trauma that they have to go through.

Although the novel ends on a tragic note, it leaves a strong message to all the readers, “Love means never having to say that you are sorry

This book from Segal is a must read. I would recommend it to everyone as it makes you realize what true love and loss is. It would surely have a long lasting impression in the reader’s mind.
